UPSET

04/27/2012
Late around the corner
   Early at the lot
Poor in my performance
   Missing all the cues

Wake him from a slumber
   Move him unprepared
Leave him unexpected
   Hold him through the tears

This is a tough one…emotionally. It speaks to the self-criticizing (and self-loathing) we do as parents when we feel like we’ve failed at meeting our children’s needs. In this poem, Kyle is referencing several different times when we feel like we’ve fallen short in reading Matthew’s cues, making the right choices for activities, or simply being unlucky in our timing. Is it our fault that the school bus arrived earlier than usual? No. Should we allow Matthew to sleep through dinner when he refused to nap earlier than 4PM? No. Can we read his mind with 100% accuracy? No. But we still feel responsible when he doesn’t understand why things are different or why he feels bad, even when circumstances are well beyond our control. All we can do is hold him while he cries, showing him that although we may not be perfect parents, we love him through everything.

Wow. This perfectly describes what I feel constantly as a parent of aoung child. It captures the total frustration I often feel when I have to make a choice I know they won’t like, or when something happens beyond our control that will upset them. Well written.

I hate to tell you that the feeling of responsiblity never leaves. I still questions actions we took when our kids we small. But then I talk to my adult children and find that they don’t even remember those times, it’s mostly my own insecurity and desires to be the perfect parent for them, This is something I still want to acheive. I wish I could spare all my children from any pain and frustration..However while they watch us handle these situation they learn how to respond when tough times happen and we are not around to help. This makes them stronger and hopefully they will always know that there will be a hug ready for them in the arms of their parents.

I view God as a parent now because I am a parent. He is always there for us when things are unexpected or stressful. He is there to comfort us, to nurture us, to help us grow and cope with life. I imagine God cries for us when we hurt because He can’t take that experience from us. And yet as we pay attetion to Him we learn and mature, able to cope with and understand more. God is parenting us as we parent. and grandparent.
